Styrenics Technology Center (STC)
The Styrenics Technology Center (STC) was opened in 2005 and is now a national benchmark for the sector. It occupies 1,000 m2 of the industrial plant in the Southern Petrochemical Pole, in Triunfo (RS).
The STC was planned to provide technological support and stimulate the segment’s competitive standing. It consists of four up-to-date laboratories, equipped with the latest technological resources and run by technical-scientific teams prepared to provide all the necessary support for customers in the development of new products and highly specific applications.
Starting in 2019, the STC will expand its capabilities to act in all of Innova’s products and businesses, whilst also starting to develop solutions for the processed plastics area.
The company’s innovation strategy prioritizes sustainable products for all business segments: the strategic thinking sees the circular economy as a good business opportunity, with volumes and competitiveness capable of changing the size and shape of the market.
Here formulas are researched to achieve higher productivity of existing grades and the development of new products.
The Polymerization System developed by the T&D team performs pilot scale tests with a patent issued by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI): they reproduce the manufacturing process of high impact polystyrene and speed up the product development cycle.
The Microscopy Laboratory provides a supporting structure to perform microscopic analysis in product development, reverse engineering, quality control, evaluation of raw materials and final products, case studies, failure analysis, among other purposes.
Its structure has equipment for sample preparation, optical and electronic microscopes.
Here it is possible to analyze in detail the composition, structure, and properties of the products under development, as well as the customers’ materials and final products, such as laminates, injected and thermoformed packages, disposable items, foams, or even durable goods such as those from the refrigeration and electro-electronic industries.
The STC is also able to support styrene monomer (SM) customers in their final applications: acrylic and polyester resins, elastomers and expandable polystyrene.
The team of researchers in the Research & Development (R&D) area: specialized in several market segments, focused on innovation, sustainability and technology.
All ready to meet the customers’ demands, develop new products and solutions to make the plastic production chain increasingly sustainable.
Awards & Certificates
One of Innova’s ultimate goals is to perform the ongoing improvement of processes: final products at the highest of quality standards, satisfied clients, motivated employees, shareholders with a vision, and a caring understanding of the community.
Sustainability in all spheres, from thought to action
Certificates
A select group of companies in the industry are certified, undergoing periodic audits guided by the principles of Responsible Care. Thirteen companies have so far received the certification, one of which is Innova, within a scenario of 961 petrochemical businesses operating in the country.
Innova’s commitment to rigorous safety and quality standards is proven by the certifications and attestations received from external organizations, making it a benchmark in the market, and assuring the excellent standard of our operations and products.
All Innova industrial plants are duly certified according to the following standards.
The RoHS (Restriction of Certain Hazardous Substances) compliance certificate for Plants II and IV, regulates the presence of heavy metals and other hazardous substances in products marketed in the electrical and electronics segments of the European Community and the United Kingdom (renewed in 2021).
The Operation Clean Sweep® certificate, granted by Plastivida (licensee of the International Program Operation Clean Sweep, OCS®), in line with the principles of the Plastics Sectoral Forum – For a Clean Ocean.
Innova is a company committed to the implementation of the Pellet Zero Program, aimed at mitigating the loss of pellets, flakes and powder to the environment (issued in 2021).
Certificate from the Equipment Inspection Service (SPIE), granted to Unit II by the Brazilian Institute of Oil, Gas and Biofuels (IBP), which acts as the Product Certification Body (OCP).
The certificate is granted to industries that operate boilers, pressure vessels or piping and which have their production validated by audits without compromising safety levels.
Innova has received the gold seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol 2024 Program, run by Getúlio Vargas Foundation’s Center for Sustainability Studies (FGV).
The program develops calculation tools based on the highest international accounting standards for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
This year, in addition to scope 1 (emissions as a direct result of operations) and scope 2 (emissions from the consumption of electricity, steam, heat and refrigeration), scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions from the value chain) were also audited.
Innova achieved a remarkable 84% reduction in emissions and 63% use of renewable energy. The gold seal from the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program is the great affirmation and public recognition of this result.
Awards
The Quality Award for Coca-Cola Packaging Suppliers (2020 Packaging Supplier Ranking): Innova was awarded 1st place in the Closure System (closure caps) category, in recognition of its results achieved in compliance with the goals of Food Safety, Quality, Social Responsibility and Sustainability for the 2020 cycle.
Innova was awarded 2nd place, out of 1,564 registered projects, for the scientific paper outlining the development of ECO-PS®, presented at the 23rd Brazilian Congress of Chemical Engineering. The article went on to be published in international journals in the area.
Innova received the award Proof, Not Promises from the global company Veolia, for the chemical treatment optimization during the styrene monomer (SM) manufacturing process.
The rational use of product dosages resulted in an increase of efficacy, with annual economy of US$ 940 thousand, and situates Innova as an international reference in the segment.
The Amazonas Quality Program (PQA) awarded our ECO-PS® project presented by the Innova team, among 71 applications from the largest companies from the Manaus Industrial Pole.
The program has been a national reference since 1984 and the 2023 edition was entitled "Quality in Connection with Sustainability for Amazonian Industrial Development".
The projects went through six rigorous stages of evaluation, including technical visits, with criteria such as innovation practices, process improvement and management.
Congratulations to the Innova team!
